Lake Manyara

Lake Manyara offers one of Tanzania's most varied small-scale wildlife environments. Within a relatively compact area, the landscape changes from groundwater forest to open woodland, grassland and the shimmering waters of the lake itself. The experience is different from the open plains of the Serengeti, and that contrast is precisely what makes it interesting.

Entering the forest can feel like entering another world. Tall trees create shade, monkeys move through the canopy and elephants can appear between the vegetation with very little warning. As the landscape opens, the lake begins to dominate the horizon, creating opportunities for birdlife and changing scenery.

Lake Manyara can be particularly effective as part of a northern Tanzania itinerary because it breaks up the journey between larger destinations and provides a different kind of wildlife experience. It can be combined with Tarangire and Ngorongoro for a varied northern circuit, or included as a shorter introduction for travellers with limited time.

The park's landscapes also make it interesting for photographers. The contrast between forest, wildlife and water creates opportunities that differ considerably from the classic Serengeti image.

For us, the value of Manyara is not measured by its size. It is in the variety it provides and the way it adds another texture to a Tanzania journey.
