Nyerere National Park

Southern Tanzania offers a different interpretation of safari, and Nyerere National Park is one of its most compelling destinations. The Rufiji River forms the heart of the landscape, creating channels, lakes, sandbanks and waterways that support a remarkable variety of wildlife.

Here, safari does not have to happen only from a vehicle. Boat experiences provide an entirely different perspective. Hippos gather in the water, crocodiles lie quietly along the banks and birds move through the reeds and surrounding woodland. Watching the river at sunset can be as memorable as any traditional game drive.

On land, the ecosystem supports elephants, giraffes, lions, wild dogs and numerous other species. The landscapes feel expansive, and the lower concentration of visitors in many areas can create a more intimate sense of wilderness.

Nyerere is particularly suited to travellers who have already experienced the classic northern circuit or who want a safari with a different rhythm. It can also work beautifully for couples and experienced safari travellers who value space and variety.

The journey to southern Tanzania is part of the appeal. Rather than following the most familiar route, you move into a landscape where rivers, forests and open wilderness become the dominant features.

Nyerere is Tanzania with room to breathe.
